Chapter Ten

“I need to know who else in the company is aware of what Stella and I are doing here.” Two days had passed since the incident in the garage. Jason realized he needed to conference with Trewsdale. Someone was onto them, and they hadn’t even started digging as of yet. Not really, Stella had a few hunches and they had one lead, but they still needed the proof to take the case further. Persuading Stella to let him talk to Trewsdale was another fight, one he wasn’t willing to continue to have. Someone needed to talk to the head of Tyder and he would tell her if he found anything out.

“What do you mean?” The old man looked shocked when Jason burst into his office.

“I didn’t think I was stuttering,” Jason replied. “Someone clearly knows what Stella and I are doing here.” He quickly relayed the events in the parking garage. Leaving out the fact that he and Stella, moments before had been locked in one of the most intense, sexually charged kisses of his life. Had they not been interrupted; Jason wasn’t sure he would have been strong enough to stop at the kiss. He wanted to talk about it with her, but the moment hadn’t been right. Two days prior they had both been in shock, and this morning she was in the office long before him and so absorbed in reviewing files when he came in that he didn’t want to disturb her. The case had to come first, there would be time to discuss the attraction between them later.

“This is disturbing,” Trewsdale finally replied, drumming his fingers on his chin as if contemplating whether or not he would give Jason any more information.

“It’s more than disturbing, Stella and I could have been seriously hurt of worse. It was clearly a warning shot.”

“Why didn’t you come to me right away?” Trewsdale asked. There was no way in hell Jason was going to let the man turn this around on him.

“Stella wasn’t convinced it was related, and she wants more solid proof,” he replied. “I’m not as willing to wait on a paper trail. So who are we looking at here?”

“I’ve not told any one of import, no one I would not trust completely.” Jason stared the old man down. That was a guarded and strange way to answer his question. It did nothing to make Jason feel better. It was clear people aside from the three of them were aware. Could it be that Trewsdale was hiding something? Even though Stella was confident the old man was innocent, something in Jason’s gut told him not to trust Trewsdale.

“Anyone, at this point, would be important to know about,” Jason replied. “Just because you trust them, doesn’t mean I do. I won’t have Stella put in danger.”

“Mr. MacNamara, do you think I want Stella in any danger?” Trewsdale countered. “She is the only daughter of one of my oldest friends.”

“Then you should be even more motivated to tell me what you know,” Jason replied.
